2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Russell County finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Russell County finished eighth in Class 6A region two with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. No team at Russell County ever lost more games in a season than the ten they lost last year. The defense allowed a team record 551 points last season. The Warriors last playoff victory came during the 1998 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Russell County averaged scoring just 10.1 points a game. The Warriors also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 55.1 points a game. The Warriors would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 0-20 record. Since 2010, the Russell County football program has struggled with a record of 13-47. Over the past 25 seasons, Russell County has not won much with a record of 66-184. Their 26.0% winning percentage ranks 56th in Class 6A and 363rd in the AHSAA. The Warriors have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 1998. Russell County will enter the 2016 season under their ninth coach in the past 22 seasons after Demond McCoy leaves the head football coaching position vacant. His four teams finished with a 8-32 record and actually qualified for the playoffs in his second season with a 5-6 record. The playoff spot was only the fourth in the schools history. The five win season were the most since the 1998 season for Russell County. The last two seasons produced consecutive 0-10 records. Dwight Jones is returning to Russell County as the head football coach after being away from the school since 1994. He led the program from 1990-1994 with a record of 29-37 and the teams last playoff victory in 1998. He most recently served as the head coach at Harris County GA the past two seasons and has been in Georgia since the 2004 season. He also was the head football coach at Auburn in 2001 with an 8-6 record. Coach Jones' overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 29-37 (43.9%). Over the course of his career, Coach Jones' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times . The Russell County Warriors will play in Class 6A region two during the 2016 season. The Warriors enter the 2016 season in the middle of a 22 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Warriors will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Russell County will be to simply win some games. The Warriors open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Tallassee on Friday, August 19 at Corbett-Mitchell Stadium. Last year the Tallassee Tigers finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 5A region three. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Jackson by a score of 35-7. Russell County and Tallassee have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Warriors have a 0-11-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2011 with Tallassee winning by a score of 40-14. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
